Extended Essay Guidance

Course Concept

The extended essay is an in-depth study of a focused topic chosen from the list of available Diploma Programme subjects (according to the student’s area of interest), and is a crucial component of the IB core. Our course is designed to assist students in successfully completing this major 4000 word independent research project, through guided instruction and practice. Through step-by-step instruction, individualised feedback, and in-depth exploration of research methods and writing techniques, CourseLeap’s Guidance for the Extended Essay aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to produce a high-quality piece of work.

Students will learn how to formulate a focused research question, conduct independent research, analyse and interpret data, as well as properly cite and reference their sources. Moreover, we aim to help them develop strong research and critical thinking skills, in addition to improving their academic writing abilities, allowing them to produce a well-structured and clearly articulated extended essay that meets the expectations and requirements of the IB Diploma Programme.

All extended essays are externally assessed by examiners appointed by the IB, and the maximum grade you can acquire is a score of 34.

The score a student receives relates to a band. The bands are:

A – work of an excellent standard.

B – work of a good standard.

C –work of a satisfactory standard.

D – work of a mediocre standard.

E – work of an elementary standard.

Testimonials

“Looking back at when we started I was oblivious to what the IB was really about. These Pre IB Courses have not only given me a great understanding of the course but also given me a strong platform to go ahead with. Writing has always been my weakness, glad I got to learn it. Our instructor, Miss Chrisann, guided us very well and she was amazing!”

“The course gave me a real taste of how writing an Internal Assessment would look like. Our instructors & peer mentors were absolutely fabulous; they were able to identify exactly what our doubts were and explained them quite clearly.”

Indrasena Reddy

Delhi Private School (DPS), Dubai, CBSE, 2021, Pre-IB Introduction to IB Core (TOK, EE, CAS)

“The knowledge regarding the process of actually writing a research paper and managing the sources was the most valuable takeaway for me from this course.

The classes were fun, engaging and informative. I have understood how to write a research paper, evaluate sources, differentiating between types of research &
preventing plagiarism which are important aspects for the TOK subject”

Prisha Agarwal

Springdales School, Delhi, CBSE, 2021. Studying IBDP at Woodstock School, Mussoorie, Pre-IB Introduction to IB Core (TOK, EE, CAS)

“IB maths is quite different from what we had learnt previously as it encourages us to not use a standard method or a formula on how to solve questions but pushes us to find an elegant and intuitive way out. Our instructors were absolutely fabulous along with the peer mentors who were able to identify exactly what our confusion or doubts were and explained them quite clearly. I think this is a great attribute of a teacher to be able to identify what is on the mind of their student. The course also gave me a real taste of how writing an Internal Assessment would look like. It also helped us to get familiarized with the use of technology.”

“This Pre IB course was very helpful. The highlight of the course for me was framing the research question and citing sources. Miss Chrisann was an excellent teacher and was able to clearly explain all the concepts. The activities she planned were a lot of fun and very engaging. I felt really good writing and presenting my own paper. The new skills I learned through the course which is going to be very helpful for my further IB studies include how to write the TOK, IA and EE papers.”

“| would like to thank Ms Chrisann for making this course an amazing experience.

She is a fantastic instructor and she was able to guide us through the maze that is the IBDP core. I found the research skills, academic honesty skills and all the activities we did to understand this as the most valuable aspect of the course. I was able to gain a deeper understanding into what I should expect from the IBDP in the next two years.”
