These could be any of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Computer Science. Of the two sciences selected, at least one must be at the Higher Level. The most natural pairings are Biology and Chemistry, Chemistry and Physics, and Mathematics and Physics. However, when planning out your IBDP subject roster, it is strongly recommended to take into account your destination of further studies, as well as potential career destinations.
The reason this is important is because of differing academic requirements and professional standards in countries around the world. For example, entry requirements for most STEM degrees in the UK often require Math AA HL and one of the sciences such as Physics or Chemistry at HL at the minimum. Whereas in India, most STEM degrees demand three sciences at Higher Level. Further studies in medicine around the UK and US generally call for Chemistry and Biology HL. However, in India for instance, Physics is often a strict requirement for a pathway into practising medicine in addition to Chemistry and Biology HL. With regards to a degree in engineering, contrary to the common belief that Computer Science is a requirement, students must take Mathematics and one more science, generally Physics or Computer Science, to be eligible for most universities around the world. This applies to Indian colleges also, with the notable exception of the Indian Institute of Technology, which demands physics, chemistry and mathematics as the primary subjects. Students are also recommended to take up a coding course or tutorial from the widely available cornucopia of resources online. When it comes to pure economics as well as combined economics degrees, Math HL is a highly regarded subject choice across universities in addition to any one science subject including Environmental Science and Sports Science. This is because at the higher level, pure economics begins to heavily rely on quantitative methods.
