Course Overview
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is an integral part of the IB Diploma Programme. When combined with the Extended Essay, the TOK essay and TOK exhibition can add up to 3 points to the overall score of your IB exams. Taught over two years, this mandatory IB component encourages students to critically examine the nature of knowledge and ways of knowing. Students are guided to challenge their own knowledge frameworks, recognize biases, and gain new perspectives. This exploration is assessed through two key components: the TOK exhibition and the TOK essay, both of which we are pleased to present as part of CourseLeap’s IB courses for Research:
The TOK exhibition: students select one of thirty five IA prompts and three real-world objects that link to the chosen prompt. A 950-word commentary has to be written connecting the prompt with the objects and knowledge areas. This accounts for one-third of the overall TOK mark. It is completed by the end of the first DP year. The TOK essay: Students select one of six prescribed TOK Essay Topics and write a 1600-word TOK essay over six months, using TOK Essay Topics like certainty, evidence, and subjectivity. This TOK essay constitutes two-thirds of the overall TOK mark and is undertaken in the second DP year.
With the advent of AI we remain committed to navigating technological advancements and the challenges of AI in our IB courses while advising students to write authentic and creative research papers.

TOK is an incredibly complex and challenging part of the IB. The conceptual framework differs from other subjects, so a unique approach to the tasks at hand were required. Ms. Chrisann guided us through this process by breaking TOK down into understandable pieces. Her wealth of information informed our personal experience. Her guidance, thorough feedback, resources and experience cultivated many of our skills, such as critical and creative thinking. Taking this course is worth it, and I recommend future IB learners to sign up in order to successfully tackle the complexities of TOK Essay.
