Course Concept

Data is only as valuable as we make it.  As the amount of data in the world increases, the ability to extrapolate meaning and influence through analysis  has put varieties of demands for Math in the modern world. Mathematics today includes statistical literacy, algorithmic thinking, and modelling of data. Many jobs and university courses across the Sciences and Humanities  programmes now call for competence in applied mathematics. Students of high school also need skills to be able to use and analyse data for their research work in various subject disciplines. The course will help students with these skills required in their rigorous pre university courses like the IB Diploma, or further in their University studies.

Microsoft Excel is a wonderful application tool for data analysis and can be used to achieve some of the above student learning outcomes. Utilising a powerful spreadsheet-oriented technique in teaching reinforces mathematical concepts, and has further enabled us to integrate information technology into the mathematics curricula. It helps individuals accurately assess situations and make better decisions.

Visual representations of information provide an accessible way to identify trends, patterns, and outliers—all of which help to tell the story within the data. This course helps you unlock the power of data using the data analysis and visualization tools built into Excel. Active student engagement is at the heart of the course. Bringing visual, hands-on exercises into the learning process will turn students from almost passive spectators into active participants.

Each teaching module includes practical examples that show how to apply the techniques to real-world problems that require data handling and analysis. We start teaching with the foundational concepts, including basic statistical calculations. We then teach how to visualize data, relationships, and future results with Excel’s histograms, graphs, and charts. Finally, we will consolidate your learnings through a Finale Task that you will present in front of your parents.

*To meet the new demands on Math, significant changes have been made in the IB DP Mathematics curriculum in 2019 so that it continues to be relevant and rigorous, and the new course MAI Math Applications and Interpretation has been introduced. IB Diploma Math students have to write a research report on a topic of their choice called math exploration, which makes heavy use of data analysis skills; even the best of math students find this challenging, having not learnt these skills in middle and high school. The course will help students to use data meaningfully in their research work, investigations, and math explorations.

“This course was absolutely amazing and a completely new experience. I have never used Excel properly, and I really felt like I wanted to learn something new. Our instructor, Mr. Mohit really did make an effort to teach us very nicely and I did learn a lot. The course managed to get to the point of each module, and it was very direct, which was great. The probability questions were super fun and it was nice interacting with other students. The homework was also a good way to practice my skills.”

“This course has greatly expanded my knowledge about Excel, data visualization and a lot about data analysis and statistics. Learning was pretty much the same as physical, as there was a great amount of interaction. Mohit Sir constantly answered my doubts and had great communication skills. Arjun sir too, answered my doubts and he taught the math concepts perfectly. The finale tasks were very interactive and exposed us to great teamwork. They were all creative and summed up everything we learnt about in the past month!”

Vidit Bhimrajka

“I really had so much fun doing the MS Excel course. In the beginning, I had never touched excel before because in school we either draw graphs by hand or make them in google sheets. But I got to learn so many new things to do in excel like equations and charts, and even some simple shortcuts to make collecting data easier, such as how to automatically populate a list. I especially enjoyed the finale task, because we got to work in teams and complete the tasks together.”

I haven’t used excel for math before this course. This course was very beneficial for me because I learnt to use excel to solve a variety of math problems. I also learned to visualise data, solve probability questions, graph tables, solve basic calculus questions, create and analyse correlation and regression charts and tables, the usage of pivot charts and many more. The homework helped me assess how well I knew the topics and weather I could apply everything I learned to different questions.

Tulasi Anantharamakrishnan

I learnt various excel skills and also learnt how to plot graphs and use excel to simplify math concepts. Our instructor, Mr. Mohit added great value to the course as he is very well-versed in the course content. He is able to make the sessions interesting and is able to keep the attention of the class. He always clarifies doubts and guides us through the difficult topics. The homework tasks provided me with the opportunity to revise and remember the concepts taught during the sessions, which was very helpful.

Karun Mongia

This course was very helpful and interesting for me. I learnt about pivot charts and analysis which was fun and will definitely help in the long run.

Rishita Shroff

Bombay Scottish School, Mumbai, Grade 10, ISC, 2020

I have learnt how to use Microsoft Excel effectively but also how to visualise data and plot it well. The homework tasks allowed us to try what we had learned alone and then ask for help so that we could understand to what extent we had understood and what we needed help in. The finale tasks were fun and interesting and allowed us to use all the skills we had learned in these sessions to solve them.

Microsoft Excel

A very well conceptualised program for the children . Mrs Dhingra ‘s passion towards creating a par excellent educational program so that our children could be on par with the educational system world over is very evident. The children were given tips and short cut methods to solve their problems . This would certainly help them in their Maths solving capabilities moving forward .
Mr Mohit Verma their teacher was extremely patient and was always ready to solve any and all children’s queries no matter how many times it was required to be explained .
Here’s wishing the team all the very best in their endeavour to create a high standard of education for our children .
