The academic year’s intensity is ramping up, and we’re right there with you! The TOK Exhibition commentary is just about closed, a significant milestone in your Theory of Knowledge journey. And yes, the much-anticipated TOK essay titles have also been released, marking the next exciting, sometimes daunting, stage of your TOK assessment. But don’t panic, assessment in Theory of Knowledge is all about understanding knowledge questions. These are the core inquiries that underpin all your explorations and arguments within the course.
The good news is that you’re not starting from scratch. You already possess a wealth of prior knowledge and understanding gained from your TOK IB course while writing the commentary. This knowledge will be invaluable in tackling the complex and thought-provoking questions asked by the TOK essay titles and helping you map out a tight TOK essay structure.
Let’s see how.
In your TOK commentary you identified a prompt (this is a knowledge question) and connected it to three diverse objects within their specific, real-world context, building links between objects and prompt. In the TOK Essay, on the other hand, you’re drawing connections between your chosen TOK title and Areas of Knowledge, and you can reuse those same real-life contexts as evidence and TOK Essay examples when discussing knowledge claims for your Essay.
To strengthen connections between object and prompt in the commentary, you provided justifications and supported your points with evidence through real-life examples. In the TOK essay you extend that, exploring different points of view, which can be different perspectives on the title, and supporting them with evidence from real life, which will become your TOK Essay examples. The addition to the essay task is evaluating the arguments you have presented and considering their implications for knowledge in those AOKS.

The TOK commentary writing journey has already equipped you to begin planning to write the TOK essay. In the essay you’re required to explore the TOK knowledge question which is the title, linking it to the Areas of Knowledge. With the commentary and essay tasks aligning in many ways, the following TOK essay tips will help you carry those skills forward into your TOK essay structure.
Key Tips for Writing Your Theory of Knowledge Essay
- Repurpose your Exhibition’s real-world contexts as evidence and examples for your Essay. The justifications and supporting points that you used in the commentary become your arguments and points of view for you essay
- The clean, structured approach of each Exhibition commentary now serves as a model for paragraphs in your essay
- Extend your links. In the Exhibition you linked objects to your prompt; in the Essay, link examples and arguments from the Areas of Knowledge (AOKs) to your chosen title.
- Clear, precise writing is key. The commentary demanded clarity and precision to achieve excellence. Carry that clarity of expression, structure, and justification into your essay
- Aim for “lucid,” “precise,” and “convincing” in everything you write, a hallmark of top-band work in both assessments.
