The use of a calculator is **not allowed** in paper 1 for Math AA, and for paper 2 and 3, the use of a calculator is allowed. For Math AI, students have access to a calculator for all the papers.

**Exam Tips for Non-Calculator Paper (IB AA Math)**

- While finding domain and range, solving equations and inequalities, it is a good strategy to sketch the graphs wherever possible.
- Carefully identify the restricted domain of the many-to-one function in order to find the inverse. Find the inverse keeping in mind that the range of the inverse will be the domain of the restricted domain of the given function.
- While solving trigonometric equations, it is important to consider the domain and use the unit circle to give all possible solutions to the equation in the given domain.
- For questions of financial maths involving annuities and loans, identifying the pattern for the first few compounding periods is important to be able to generalise it.
- Always apply chain rule while differentiating a composition of functions.
- Give emphasis to the command terms “show that” or “hence” and answer appropriately.

**Exam Tips for Calculator Paper (IB AA Math & IB AI Math):**

- Save fully intermediate answers on the graphic calculator and use those in the subsequent steps. Rounding to 3 significant figures only occurs at the final answer stage.
- Graphs on the GDC can sometimes be misleading. Both analytical skills and conceptual understanding are important while using the GDC.
- The window should be adjusted appropriately on the calculator to identify the key features of a graph.
- For a question which is 5 marks or more, an answer directly from the GDC is not sufficient. Appropriate working needs to be shown, for example, sketch the graph as a part of the working.
- While solving Trigonometric equations, make sure the calculator is in the correct angle mode – degrees or radians.
- While dealing with Trigonometric Functions in Calculus or Probability and Statistics, make sure to use radians.

**Exam Tips for Paper 3 (IB AA Math & IB AI Math) **

Paper 3 for AA and AI HL comprises two extended problems with a total weightage of 55 marks and a duration of one hour.

For AA, the focus is on proofs and reasoning, and calculus, whereas for AI, the focus is on statistics and modelling.

- Make sure you have a thorough understanding of the syllabus which can be achieved through a continuous review and recall.
- Work through past papers to understand the format and develop the skills required to solve an extended problem.
- Read the question carefully to understand the context of the problem. The question would also have an introductory paragraph explaining the purpose of the problem.
- The questions are structured in a manner so that failure to attempt an early part of the question will not prevent the student from attempting the later parts. Therefore, manage time efficiently, if stuck on one part, answer follow up questions first.
- Write neat and organised solutions so it is easier to answer questions which are interrelated.
- For AI Students, paper 3 may require analysis of a large dataset. The data must carefully be entered into the GDC. There would also be frequently a value given (for example, the mean of the data) which can be used to check if data is entered correctly.
- Attempt some timed mock tests.
- Stay calm and confident while attempting the paper. Keep going back to the information obtained from the parts already solved.
