The IB Theory of Knowledge Programme
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a core part of the IB’s Diploma Programme and is taught over the course of two years. The programme encourages students to think critically about the nature of knowledge itself and explore ways of knowing. Students examine and challenge their own inbuilt framework of knowledge and beliefs in order to develop self-awareness, recognise biases and widen their perspectives. The TOK programme achieves this through two key assessments: the TOK Exhibition and the TOK Essay.
The TOK Exhibition
The TOK Exhibition is a new task for Grade 11 IBDP students, replacing the previous TOK Presentation from May 2021. It is assessed internally, but moderated externally and accounts for 33% of their grade. The TOK Exhibition, consisting of a selection of three objects based on a prompt and an accompanying 950 word commentary, is usually introduced in the second term of Grade 11 and is to be completed by the end of the academic year.
The TOK Essay
On the other hand, the TOK Essay, which carries 67% of the grade, requires students to choose from a selection of six question titles prescribed by the IBO at the beginning of Grade 12. Students have six months to write a 1600 word essay outlining their findings while accessing different Areas of Knowledge (AOKs) and Ways of Knowing (WOKs) related to their essay title.
Exhibition Commentary and Essay: Two Sides of the Same Coin
While they have different approaches, the TOK commentary and the TOK essay are meant to showcase the student’s understanding of different facets of the same subject. Both emphasise critical thinking and application of abstract knowledge ideas. In the TOK Exhibition, the knowledge question (KQ) is the “prompt,” and in the TOK Essay, the title question itself functions as the KQ. Therefore, a similar style of decoding applies, where students have to consider the key words and construct arguments, supporting them with examples from real life.
Transferable Skills: A Great TOK Exhibition Can Lead to a Great TOK Essay
Many students don’t realise that they can leverage the skills acquired during the writing of their Exhibition commentary to help them in writing the TOK Essay. When planning the TOK Exhibition, the student has to make real-world connections through their chosen objects by placing them within a broader context and explaining how they relate to the knowledge question of the prompt. This ability to draw connections between real-life examples and abstract ideas while situating their arguments within relevant Areas of Knowledge and WOKs, is a crucial skill students can directly transfer to the TOK essay. Being able to correctly understand TOK concepts, draw clear and meaningful links between ideas and examples, highlight multiple perspectives and accurately interpret their significance are all skills needed for both TOK assignments. Moreover, to ensure they are submitting an excellent piece of academic writing, students should know how to plan essays effectively, use references, make citations and write captivating introductions and conclusions.
If all of this sounds overwhelming, our team of long experienced, highly qualified teachers are well positioned to help you with the TOK Exhibition and Essay. If your research and preparation for the TOK Exhibition is thorough and well-structured you have laid the groundwork for a smooth transition to a powerfully executed Essay. In this way you can approach TOK with ease and confidence.
