MYP to DP Physics: What Changes and How to Prepare
- October 7, 2026
MYP provides students with a useful foundation in Physics, having been introduced to the basic Physics concepts that include kinematics, heat, light, waves and electricity. The MYP approach also gives them valuable experience with inquiry, investigation and making connections between scientific ideas and the world around them. An experienced MYP tutor can help students strengthen these foundational concepts before making the transition to DP.
In DP, these concepts are revisited with greater depth and mathematical rigour. Mathematics becomes an increasingly important part of this journey. Simply knowing a formula and substituting values into it is not enough. Students do not need to be exceptional mathematicians to study Physics, but they should be reasonably comfortable with basic algebra, graphs, units, proportional relationships and rearranging equations. As they move towards DP, strengthening their skills in algebra, vectors and trigonometry can make a considerable difference. More importantly, students need to begin seeing mathematics as a language in Physics.
The difference is also in the approach to assessment which becomes apparent in the way questions are framed. In DP, students may be presented with an unfamiliar situation requiring them to decide which concept—or sometimes a combination of concepts—is relevant and how best to approach the problem.
There is certainly a larger volume of content in DP, but the more significant change is the depth of understanding and level of thinking expected.
MYP students develop the basic research and inquiry skills that can prove very useful , particularly when they undertake the Internal Assessment (IA) in DP—the scientific investigation that forms an important part of the Physics course.
Main challenges :
Moving beyond rote learning
Students who have been successful by memorising formulae and practising familiar question types can initially find DP challenging. This is where conceptual understanding becomes crucial. Working with an MYP tutor can help students identify gaps in their understanding and build stronger conceptual foundations.
Difficulty with time management and Perseverance
For students who study only for the preparation of a graded assessment , and rely mostly on solving past exam questions face a major challenge in the subject. Being willing to ask questions, learn from mistakes and persist through a difficult problem is an important part of becoming a successful Physics student.
Students who are thoroughly engaged in classroom discussions, taking responsibility for their own learning, by digging deeper in the concepts;asking the whys, hows and what-if questions are the ones who do well in the subject.
Classroom learning provides the foundation, along with that regular revision, purposeful practice and the ability to identify one’s own areas of difficulty become increasingly important in DP.
Why choose DP Physics
Physics could be a very good choice for the students for whom the answer to most of the questions below is yes !
- Do I enjoy understanding how and why things work?
- Am I reasonably comfortable with mathematics?
- Do I enjoy solving problems rather than simply finding the “right” answer?
- Am I willing to persevere through something even when I don’t understand it immediately?
- Do I enjoy asking questions and investigating ideas?
At the same time, Physics should not be chosen simply because grades in MYP were good & hence it is seen as a strong subject. Subject choices are most meaningful when they reflect a student’s interests, strengths, aspirations and willingness to engage with the subject.
For the right student, DP Physics can develop a way of thinking—one that encourages curiosity, logical reasoning, persistence and the confidence to keep asking why.
To help students bridge this transition seamlessly, CourseLeap offers comprehensive academic support tailored specifically for IB Physics:
- Pre-IB Foundation Courses: Focus on strengthening fundamental algebraic, trigonometric, and vector skills while introducing key physics concepts and mathematical rigor to ensure a confident start to the DP syllabus.
- Full-Term Tutoring: Provides ongoing step-by-step guidance, deep conceptual mastery, classroom discussion enrichment, and personalized mentorship for internal assessments (IAs).
- Targeted Revision Programs: Delivers focused exam preparation through structured practice with past paper questions, time-management strategies, and techniques for tackling unfamiliar application-based problem sets.
